THE BREAK-UP DIET
TORONTO NOW MAGAZINE
It belongs with Nora Ephron's Heartburn
as a great work of art about splitting up.
"Tamara Williamson’s The Break Up Diet is a clever, emotional and intensely personal narrative that takes you, insight by insight; from heart-hollowing suspicions to explosive confrontations to painful introspection; through what is essentially a brilliant musical autopsy of a failed marriage."
"Engrossing, like a really good extended Moth Radio Hour story backed by your favourite indie bar band."
" This is not musical theatre like you would expect. It’s raw and alternative. It sugar coats nothing and it does not tidy itself up for a happy ending.

Once heralded by Eye Magazine as “The Godmother of Canadian Indie,” Toronto musician Tamara Williamson is back. As one of Canada's most respected creative songwriter's, she hit's us with a new, raw, groundbreaking show. You have never seen anything like The Break-Up Diet an autobiographical, alt-rock musical about the swift collapse of Williamson’s seemingly perfect marriage.
Adapted from the soon-to-be published book, The Break-Up Diet tells the story of a year in the life of Williamson as she endures the ruthlessly fast disintegration of her outwardly perfect marriage. “This is life transformed into devastating art,” says Author Noah Richler “(Williamson’s) inimitable, fiery style threatens to light up the room in a rhapsodic moment of beautiful, lyric revenge." Punctuated by raw guttural songs written by Williamson at the time of the events portrayed, the music is driving alternative rock performed by Tamara and her band, Mrs. Torrance.
This is not musical theatre as you would expect and can also be performed in Music venues. The Break-Up Diet is a narrated story intertwined with atmospheric soundscapes and big alternative rock songs. In 2020 the Break-Up Diet is now incorporating film into it's performance.
It captures the audience and takes them on a journey much like watching a movie. It's new and the audiences are coming back for more.
